National Fraud Helpline has issued an urgent warning about fake scam videos circulating on social media featuring consumer expert Martin Lewis.
The AI generated images appear to show Lewis advising the public to urgently make investments in a platform called Quantum AI.
But the videos are part of a widespread scam in which fraudsters are trying to convince the public into depositing money into fake investment funds.
Because Lewis is a well-respected consumer expert, scammers are using AI to animate his image to trick people into clicking on fraudulent Facebook and Instagram links.
In one of the videos the fake Martin Lewis can be seen walking down the street urging the public to invest now or lose out.
On another clip his AI generated image is seen looking into the camera as numbers beside him appear to show how much money can be made from the Quantum AI investment opportunity.
There is another faked video which appears to to show Lewis giving a lecture in a room full of people.
Lewis has spoken out in the past about his image being used by scammers.
Martin Richardson, senior partner at National Fraud Helpline, said: “What we find really concerning is the proliferation of these AI generated Martin Lewis videos and how many different versions there are.
“The scammers are commercially minded and it suggests to us that they are successfully reeling victims in. This has really only started to happen in the last few days and it has exploded.
“It will sometimes be weeks or months before people realise that they have been scammed.
“Martin Lewis is a man who is trusted by the public which is why scammers are pretending he is recommending their fake investment opportunity. The advent of generative AI makes this all too easy.
“We have seen and successfully recovered money for victims of fake Martin Lewis scams before. We suspect there are hundreds if not thousands more victims in this latest AI generated scam encouraging people to invest in the Quantum AI platform..”
One fake video seen on Instagram and Facebook is about three minutes a long and includes a section where an AI generated image of Prime Minister Keir Starmer is seen giving a press conference apologising for not being able to tell the public before about this so-called investment opportunity.
Mr Richardson said social media companies need to do more to help stop the rise of these scams.
