National Fraud Helpline is warning about a new winter heating allowance text that is doing the rounds.

The law firm says anyone receiving the text should just delete it.

Martin Richardson, senior partner, at National Fraud Helpline says no-one should reply to the text and it is very important not to click on the link.

The scam text message tells recipients that they should apply for a winter heating allowance and that they will be eligible for £300.

Warnng about winter heating scam text

The message purports to come from the Department of Work and Pensions.

As part of the scam recipients of the message are urged to act quickly with a short deadline given.

Mr Richardson said: “It is very common for scammers to add a sense of urgency when they are trying to steal victims’ money. This is a very common ploy.

“The scammers are taking advantage of the fact that many people have lost access to the winter fuel allowance and will be keen to get this money replaced.

“We are not clear what the link on the text message does but it is likely to be a phishing website that aims to steal information or your money.

“No-one should click on the link or reply to the message. The best thing to do is delete the scam text immediately.”

It is now easy for scammers to send thousands of texts out at once as they try to trick people out of money.
