Motorists Warned Of Text Scam

A new scam in which motorists receive texts telling them to pay a fine has been sweeping across the country.

Fraudsters send convincing texts that state: ‘an unpaid parking fine was found on your vehicle.’

Recipients of the text are urged to pay immediately or face larger fines.

Consumer magazine Which? issued the warning after being alerted to the ‘very convincing’ scam.

Anyone who clicks on the link is present with a very accurate copy of the actual government website. The fake website even includes matching logos, branding and font.

Would-be victims are then asked to enter their registration number and told they must pay a parking fine of £25.

The scammers then ask for even more information including your name, email, phone number and home address to pay the fine.

Which? say the one clear sign that it is a fake website is that the url ends with .de rather than .gov.uk.
