How To Avoid Facebook Marketplace Scams.

Key signs that a Facebook Marketplace offer may be a scam.

  • The offer looks very cheap. If it seems to good to be true it probably is. Ask yourself why someone would offer goods or a service at such a low price.
  • You are asked to pay in an unusual way. If the seller asks you to pay with gift cards then this should be a red flag. Similarly, if the bank account they give you doesn’t match their name then this should also ring alarm bells.
  • Unusual photos. If the photos of what is being sold look like they have not been taken recently then this may be another clue that it is a scam. Ask for more recent pictures of even a live video.
  • The seller is rushing you. Scammers frequently tell people that they must buy something urgently. This is to try and rush you into a bad decision.
  • Check out the seller. See if they have a good ratings and reviews. Investigate when their profile was created. Brand new profiles can be a red flag.
  • Try not to pay in advance of receiving an item. This is not always possible but one thing you should avoid is paying a deposit.
