Valentine’s Day Scams Warning

National Fraud Helpline warning to lovers

As February 14th approaches, scammers are preying on couples planning last-minute getaways or those searching for the perfect Valentine’s gift.

Anyone looking for the perfect couples trip this Valentine’s Day should beware of scam travel websites, designed to lure in victims with cut price holiday deals.

After completing their purchase, buyers often find their booking cancelled – leaving them without a holiday and hundreds of pounds out of pocket.

Richard D, an internet safety expert at VPN Pro, warned: “Always research the travel agency before booking.

“Check reviews on third-party platforms and make sure the company has a verified history.”

Richard also suggested that “sticking to reputable booking sites” or working with “trusted travel agents” can help you “to avoid losing your money and vacation plans.”

Double checking the travel agency’s contact details can be helpful – if you can’t find a physical address you should think twice before sending over any payment details.

If you’re asked to pay via non-traditional methods such as wire transfers or gift cards, it’s highly likely that you’ve become the target of scammers.

Richard D said: “Valentine’s Day is unique because it allows scammers to combine heightened emotions with romantic purchases, creating a perfect storm for scams.”

“They know that people are more trusting and emotionally invested during this time, which makes their schemes harder to detect.”

Advertising high-quality jewellery at discount prices is another popular Valentine’s scam, which results in the buyer either receiving fake or low-quality goods or getting nothing at all.

To avoid falling foul of fake jewellery scams, make sure you only purchase from trusted or well-known sellers and always check customer feedback and online reviews.

It’s also helpful to use secure payment methods such as credit cards, which offer better fraud protection.

Keep an eye out for websites selling discount bouquets, Valentine’s chocolate boxes or other gifts, as these may have been set up to steal your personal and financial information.

Staying vigilant is crucial when shopping for a romantic gift.
