Vinted Scam

Popular with young adults, online second-hand marketplace Vinted has now become a breeding ground for scammers.

Most online shopping scams arise when the seller fails to send the item or takes payment for low-quality goods.

But the BBC heard how a 15-year-old selling clothes on the platform was targeted by fraudsters who sent malicious links to her Vinted inbox.

Alarm bells rang for Kerry, a mother from Cheshire, when she found out her daughter was asked to hand over her bank details by an account on the platform.

Just 30 minutes after posting an advert for a top on Vinted, Kerry’s daughter was messaged by the buyer who offered to pay the full £15 asking price.

The teenager was listing items on the site for the first time to earn some extra pocket money during the school holidays.

However, the buyer then sent her a link to a separate website, where she entered her card details into an online form.

The scammer asked how much money was in the account, and Kerry’s daughter replied that it only had £20.

In an attempt to steal as much money as possible, the fraudster told her to add another card linked to an account with at least £250 inside.

After hearing the school girl talking about the transactions, Kerry decided to step in.

“I basically intervened and said, hang on – what’s going on?” said Kerry.

“She’d asked us for another card to use, and immediately when she said that I said ‘hang on this sounds extremely dodgy’.

“This doesn’t sound like it’s proper, and it doesn’t sound like a legit Vinted transaction.”

She immediately cancelled her daughter’s card and made her delete the account so she didn’t fall victime to the Vinted scam.

A spokesperson for Vinted told the BBC that keeping its members safe is a top priority, stating that its regulations mean anyone under 18 is not allowed to make a profile.

It suggested that sellers could take steps such as adding phone verification methods or identity checks for suspicious behaviour.
