Barclays Bank Scam Warning

How to avoid a holiday scam

A UK bank is warning its customers to watch out following an increase in online scam adverts, saying they could ‘trick anyone’.

Barclays shared a post on Facebook, asking followers to look out for “red flags” in an advert featuring a “five star luxury apartment” at discount price.

The short clip appears to be an unassuming ad for a holiday villa, but is actually an example of a scam that Barclays say can catch anyone out.

Hidden in the video are key warning signs to look out for, including the use of AI generated images and too-good-to-be-true prices.Barclays bank scam warning

The villa is also new to booking platforms and has no ratings or reviews which could raise suspicions.

Scammers often create fake listings with no reviews to trick people before the listing gets reported and removed.

A spokesperson for the bank said: “Anyone can be tricked by a scammer – they change tactics, often, and adapt quickly.

“We’re constantly uncovering new scams.”

They also raised concerns about the rise of ‘social engineering’ scams, where fraudsters convince victims to hand over personal information, warning that fraudsters can “pretend to be from your bank, the police, or other trustworthy organisations, and ask for private information, such as your date of birth, bank account details and one-time passcodes.”

Barclays’ also reminded the public of the government’s “Take Five” fraud campaign, which urges people to stop and think before sharing personal or financial information – helping to prevent fraud by encouraging simple, cautious steps.

The bank advises people to be suspicious of any unsolicited emails, messages or phone calls, and to never click on any links or attachments.

Scammers will often use pressure tactics, such as claiming an offer is ‘unlimited’ prompting victims to act quickly and send over their money to secure the deal.

Any legitimate booking platforms or holiday rental owners would never pressure consumers into making a purchase, so it’s important to be skeptical of overly generous offers or discounts.
