Winter Fuel Allowance Scam

National Fraud News: Scam texts alert

Scam texts are being sent to pensioners in England to try and cheat them out of their savings.

The texts claim to come from the Government – offering sympathy for the winter fuel payments cuts and promising an alternative living allowance fund which can support people instead.

Receivers of the text are told to click a link to apply for the payment, which they say will cover the lack of winter heating subsidy payments this year.

To add legitimacy to the text, it finishes with the sentence: “Thank you for your support to the British government.”

In July, Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared that the winter fuel payment would be given only to those claiming pension credit or other means-tested benefits.

The text reads: “British Government Living Expenses Office Notice: We regret to inform you that due to financial constraints this year, we have had to reduce our winter heating subsidy.

“At the same time, we will compensate you in the form of a living allowance so that you can cover your heating expenses.

“The application for living allowances has now reopened, please update your information in the link after receiving the information.

“We will issue it as soon as possible after we review the information.”

Figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions have revealed that around 760,000 families who qualify for pension credit failed to claim it last year – it is worth an additional £3,900 annually.

Several politicians have taken to social media to warn people about the scam texts, including David Smith, the MP for North Northumberland, and Alan Campbell, the MP for Tynemouth.

David Smith posted: “I have been made aware of scam emails circulating about the Winter Fuel Payment and other winter payments, which may look like the picture attached.

“Please do not follow links in messages sent by unknown or odd numbers, and remember that the Government does not announce major payments through text messages.

“Take time to check with vulnerable neighbours or relatives that they are protected from these scams.”
